Manufacturing and Earth Day: What Actually Matters
When people talk about being Earth friendly, they usually talk about products or posts they share online.
That has never been enough for me.
At SelfEco Garden, we try to live this every day. Our products are made from renewable plant based materials. We do not print much in our offices. We compost when we can. We grow food indoors. Some of us drive electric vehicles.
But none of that matters if manufacturing is ignored.
That is why one of the most important decisions I ever made was choosing the right manufacturing partner.
Why Manufacturing Matters
Most people never see what happens inside a factory. But that is where the biggest impact is made.
When we chose our manufacturer, sustainability was part of the decision from the start. Not as a talking point. As a requirement.
One example is how they cool their equipment. Instead of a traditional in house chiller, they use a rooftop chiller system. That system sends cooled water through molds and equipment to keep temperatures steady.
The result is simple. It uses about 65% less energy than older systems. That savings happens every day, not just on Earth Day.
Simple Changes That Actually Work
Some of the best sustainability improvements are also the simplest.
Lighting was an easy win. The facility uses energy efficient lighting throughout the building. Motion sensors were added in conference rooms and lunch areas so lights turn off when no one is there.
These are small changes, but they add up fast.
Outside the building, landscaping was also updated. Grass and planters were replaced with rock, boulders, and tough plants that need very little water. Less maintenance. Less water. Better long term results.
Composting Made a Real Difference
The biggest shift came from one simple change.
Plastic utensils were removed from the lunchroom and replaced with SelfEco compostable utensils. Once that happened, composting made sense.
Food waste stopped going to the landfill. Trash volume dropped. Recycling increased. Compost became part of daily life inside the facility.
That is what happens when the right tools are available.
The same idea applies to growing containers.
Plantable pots like our 3 inch and 4 inch round pots help growers reduce plastic without changing how they grow.

For growers who need more strength, compostable options like the Eco 3.0 Grande pot offer a solid alternative to plastic.

Sustainability works best when it fits into real life.
What I Hope You Take From This
Earth Day looks different today than it did years ago. People want real action, not big promises.
I share these manufacturing choices because they matter. Not because they are perfect, but because they are real.
Whether you run a greenhouse, manage a garden center, or work in an office, the same idea applies. Pay attention to materials. Pay attention to waste. Pay attention to who you work with.
Earth Day should not be one day a year. It should be something you quietly improve every day.
That is how I think about it.
